Wedding dress trends are a funny thing. Unlike ready-to-wear fashion, styles don’t change massively from season to season. For the most part, the dresses are white, floor-length and often topped with dreamy details like embroidery or lace. But every bride-to-be knows it’s the details that make the dress special enough for once-in-a-lifetime wear. That’s just what we spotted at Bridal Fashion Week: exciting and elegant twists on the traditional here-comes-the-bride attire. From frilly flair like voluminous skirts and sheer overlays to offbeat silhouettes like pant suits and tiered ball gowns, the showings left us with a whole bunch of predictions about what brides will be walking down the aisle in this time next year (or maybe even before then!). Here’s a look at seven new trends that will be BIG in 2016.

1. Accent Sash: Spotted at Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera and Jenny Packham were white dresses topped with a contrasting colored sash. It’s a fun — and totally DIY-able — idea if you want to add a pop of color to your ensemble without going for a fully colored dress. It could also be a great way to compliment your bouquet or bridesmaids – or both.

2. Ball Gown Skirts: While there was a fair share of slim silhouettes, dramatic ball gown skirts reigned supreme. The dressed debuted at Reem Acra, Badgley Mischka and Ines Di Santo looked like something straight out of a Cinderella movie, and that’s by no means a bad thing. You might have trouble fitting it into your limo, but you’ll spend the day feeling like a real-life princess.

3. Tiered Skirts: Taking the full skirt one step further, these tiered skirts aren’t for the shy bride. But if you’re up for rocking a dramatic style, this is a surefire way to get a whole lot of volume with a fun + flirty ruffle element added in.

4. Embellished Sleeves: Piggybacking off the trend we saw a whole lot of during award show season, embellishments were all over the bridal runways, not only on the bodice, but on the sleeves as well. Whether it was pearls or crystal beading, those added touches are an ultra-elegant way to add a serious glam to your dress.

5. Partial Overlay: Spotted at Theia, Galia Lahav and Monique Lhuillier, this romantic skirt style overlays an accent fabric atop an otherwise classic dress. We’re thinking it looks a little bit like the most elegant kind of cape your hips could possibly sport.

6. Pant Suits: Don’t feel like wearing a dress? Ditch it for one of these crisp pantsuits from Theia, Naeem Khan or Carolina Herrera. But you should be forewarned, you just might  end up rocking a suit better the groom.

7. Separates: This trend has been appearing in bridal fashion for awhile now, but has cemented itself as a style of our time this season. Whether you opt to show a little bit of mid-drift or choose a skin-shielding two-piece, this is an easy way to add a modern spin to an otherwise classic ensemble.
